The Adventures of Allen and Opie: Early June Events 2012

Opie and I were not able to do another post last week about our adventures in "NC Beer Central" aka Asheville because we were busy at local beer events. Being quite the O'Possum about town Opie gets invited to many suave soirees and tends to drag me along. Ok...I go for the beer, people, food, fun, overall scene, and good times, so what?

First up was the opening of a new local Bar and Grille,  The Porterhouse in Greensboro, NC, (our home base) on Monday June 4th. Located at 4608 West Market Street it is in the site of the former Bert's Seafood Grille (insert shameless plug here)...an award winner for "Best Seafood" for 23 years on the local scene. New owner Eric Porter is a Johnson and Wales trained chef with experience in the biz. With 50 beers to choose from with half of the draft beers NC born (including Highland Brewing, Natty Greene's, Red Oak, Outer Banks Brewing) and a killer menu of all fresh prepped choices in a cool location it should be a big west Greensboro hit. I was the second person to order a fresh NC beer there as our bud Chef B-Ho beat us to the bar on opening day, and Opie was the first O'Possum ever to quaff a cold one there. He thinks he should get a brass plaque or something to commemorate the event but I think... not.

Check them out if you are nearby: Porterhouse Bar and Grille, 4608 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC, 27407. (336) 617-7145www.theporterhousebarandgrille.com and of course, ask to see Opie's brass plaque....or not.

Next up was a favorite event, a new beer release! This one was at another home base place in Greensboro: my oldest and most "favorite-est" brewery in NC, Natty Greene's. Opie will do a bunch more about Natty's later because it is the first NC brew pub he ever spent much time in. Tuesday June 5th was their release of "Freedom IPA" a wonderful concoction. Opie's review; ("I liked it. It was good.") Opie was invited by the founders and owners, Chris Lester and Kayne Fisher to attend. I didn't hear about it until the last minute (thanks Uncle Mike) because I think Opie was going to ditch me for a night on the town on his own. Sorry O'Possum boy, it did not work! The upstairs bar was packed and it popped! Get 'em while you can as Natty's brewers are famous for seasonal rotations that keep Opie very interested. They also debuted their new stainless steel draft towers with 12 taps of fresh tasty NC Craft Natty Greene beers available for thirsty O'Possums and the rest of us. Beautiful.

Pop 'round for a fresh pint and keep an eye out for a frisky O'Possum, he has been spotted there a lot.  Natty Greene's Pub and Brewing Co. Greensboro, NC. Elm Street location; 345 South Elm Street, 27401.(336) 274-1373www.nattygreenes.com

We'll get back to the reviews of our last trip to Asheville next time as I know most of you beer fans depend on Opie's beer reviews to decide weather to try them or not. Opie also has some retail partner info and winery reviews coming up so stay tuned, and drinkNC.

(If you have any wine, beer, retail shops, homebrew events or whatever you would like Opie to attend or visit just drop him a line atapodes@aol.com, reference "Opie" in your subject line so you don't get spammed out of our email and we will try to get to some of them as able. Our travel time is limited so sending your corporate jet or limo for our transportation will of course facilitate our ability to attend ;)
